Ed Kilpela has represented both international and domestic clients in complex commercial disputes, class actions, mass tort and product liability matters, government investigations, and white collar criminal matters before U.S. federal and state courts, U.S. regulatory agencies, and arbitration panels.
Ed's civil litigation clients have included institutions from the banking, investment, pharmaceutical, telecommunication, insurance, and consumer goods industries. He has also represented both individual and corporate clients who were the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and other state and federal agencies. Ed has also represented individuals, including a senior member of the U.S. Senate, in both federal criminal proceedings and federal administrative proceedings.
Before joining the firm, Ed practiced at the litigation-only firm of Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C. In law school, Ed won the Henry M. Campbell Moot Court competition, receiving awards for best oralist and best brief.
A representative sample of Ed's litigation experience includes the following:
- Obtained a full defense verdict in less than 30 minutes as second chair defending a client's interests in a premises liability trial in state court.
- Served as second chair from depositions through trial as national counsel for several national insurance companies defending physician and health institution clients against malpractice claims.
- Represented large multinational pharmaceutical corporation in multiple cases across the country that were consolidated for purposes of primary discovery. Was lead counsel in multiple depositions of named plaintiffs and prescribing physicians defending against allegations that company failed to adequately warn consumers and prescribing health providers about potential product risks.
- Represented large multinational consumer goods manufacturer in class action litigation regarding alleged product defect.
- Conducted investigation for several large international financial institutions in response to investigations led by the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and other federal agencies.
- Represented former U.S. Senator in criminal proceedings brought by the U.S. Department of Justice.
- Represented former CEO of large financial institution in criminal and administrative proceedings stemming from allegations of accounting manipulation and fraud.
